🏛️ History
Chebeague Island has a rich history that dates back to the Native American inhabitants of the region. The name “Chebeague” is derived from a Native American word meaning “isle of many springs”. The island was first settled by Europeans in the 18th century and was primarily a fishing and farming community. In 2007, Chebeague Island seceded from the town of Cumberland and formed its own town, becoming Maine’s newest town.
