Weymouth was first settled in 1622 as Wessagusset Colony and was later incorporated as the town of Weymouth in 1635. It played a significant role in the early history of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and was the site of an early and unsuccessful attempt at colonization by the English. Weymouth was officially incorporated as a city in 1928.
