South Wellfleet, like the rest of Wellfleet, has a rich history dating back to its original inhabitants, the Nauset tribe. The area was first encountered by Europeans in 1606, and the town of Wellfleet was incorporated in 1763. South Wellfleet gained fame in the 19th century for its oyster fisheries. The village also has historical significance as the location of the first transatlantic wireless communication from the United States to England in 1903, sent from the Marconi Wireless Station.
