It is the second largest city in the state, situated in the central part of the state, along the western shore of the Narragansett Bay. Warwick is bordered by the cities of Cranston to the north, East Greenwich to the south, and West Warwick to the west. The city covers a total area of 49.6 square miles, of which 35.5 square miles is land and 14.1 square miles is water.

Warwick was founded by Samuel Gorton in 1642 and was one of the four original towns in the colony of Rhode Island.
