The town of Fremont was originally part of Exeter, one of the four original New Hampshire townships. In 1764, it was separated and incorporated as Poplin. In 1854, the town was renamed Fremont in honor of the western explorer and first Republican presidential candidate, John C. Frémont. The town was once home to the largest shoe factory in Rockingham County, the Ellis Shoe Company.
