Seekonk was first settled by Europeans in 1636 and was part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The name βSeekonkβ comes from a Native American word meaning βblack goose.β The town was officially incorporated in 1812. Originally, Seekonk included land that is now part of Rhode Island, but these areas were ceded to Rhode Island in the 1860s due to a border dispute.
