South Yarmouth was originally inhabited by the Wampanoag Native American tribe. English settlers arrived in the 17th century, and the area became part of the town of Yarmouth in 1639. The town was primarily a farming and fishing community during its early history. In the 19th century, it began to develop as a summer resort destination, a trend that continues to this day.
