It is bordered by Boxford to the west, Middleton to the southwest, Danvers and Wenham to the southeast, Ipswich to the northeast, and Rowley to the north. Topsfield spans an area of 12.8 square miles, of which 0.5 square miles is covered by water.

Topsfield was first settled by Europeans in 1633 and was officially incorporated in 1650. The town was likely named after Toppesfield, a village in England.
