Vega Alta was founded in 1775 by Francisco de los Olivos. The name Vega Alta translates to “High Plain” in English, referring to its geographical location. The city has a rich history and is known for its contributions to music, sports, and arts in Puerto Rico.

Vega Alta is also known for its “Plaza del Güiro,” a public art space dedicated to the güiro instrument.
