Winchester was first settled in 1733 and was incorporated in 1753. It was named after Charles Paulet, 3rd Duke of Bolton, who was known as Marquis of Winchester when the town was incorporated. The town was once a significant manufacturing center, with several water-powered mills on the Ashuelot River. Winchester’s industry included a gristmill, sawmill, and a woolen factory.
